Kitāb al-Bayān wa al-tidhkār fī sanʻat ʻamal al-ghubār
LJS 293 contains an Arabic treatise on arithmetic and algebra. The colophon states that the manuscript was written at the Nizamiyah Madrasa in Baghdad by Muḥammad ibn ʻAbd Allāh ibn al-Mujill al-Baghdādī, perhaps a student. The Nizamiyah Madrasa was the oldest and most prestigious educational institution in the city at the time. This places LJS 293 within an educational context similar to the one where LJS 101 was produced. The many marginal notes further attest to its use as a study text.
In order to cover the subject of arithmetic within his texts on the quadrivium, Boethius produced a loose translation of Nicomachus of Gerasa’s ancient Greek treatise on the subject. Boethius’s text, known as De Arithmetica, covers various aspects of number theory.
